We’ve put together this easy care guide on how to care for Air Plants so you’ll know what (and what not!) to do to keep your new little friend thriving.

Air plants, also known as Tillandsia, are a type of epiphyte, which means they grow on another tree, host, or object without soil. These tropical house plants from the bromeliad family are easy to care for and make a beautiful addition to any home or office. If you’re interested in bringing some life into your space with air plants, here are five simple tips on properly caring for them.

How to Care For Air Plants: 5 Simple Tips:

Watering

Air plants need to be watered at least once a week. Soak the plants in a bowl of water for about 15 minutes and then allow them to dry completely before returning them to their containers or displays. You can also mist them regularly in between soakings if you prefer.

Light

Air plants require bright, indirect light and should be kept away from direct sunlight or intense heat sources. You can place your air plants near an east-facing window or use artificial lighting such as fluorescent bulbs.

Fertilizing

Fertilizing is not necessary but can help support healthy growth. Use a balanced fertilizer formulated specifically for air plants every two weeks during the growing season (Spring through Fall). Avoid fertilizing during the Winter months when air plants go dormant and require fewer nutrients.

Humidity

Air Plants thrive in humid environments so it’s important to keep their surroundings moist. You can use a humidifier, misting bottle, or even just a damp cloth draped over the plant’s container if needed.

Pruning

If your air plant starts getting too large it’s time to prune it back! Trim off any dead leaves or stems and discard them safely away from other living things.   With proper care, your air plant will thrive and bring beauty into your home!

With these five tips, caring for air plants should be easy! Just remember to give them plenty of indirect light, and water weekly (or more often depending on humidity levels), fertilize every two weeks during the growing season, maintain humidity levels around the plant, and prune off any dead leaves or stems as needed. Caring for air plants is easy enough for anyone—even those without green thumbs! With these simple steps, you’ll soon have an amazing display of life in your home or office space!
